Mission Statement

Within the framework of a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the University of Kansas and the University of Panama to carry out the project entitled "Drug discovery through bioprospection in Panama", this workshop on High Throughput Screening Strategies in Drug Discovery is being organized. Further support for this workshop comes from the National Secretariat for Science, Technology, and Innovation of Panama (SENACYT) and the Organization of American States' sponsored project on Utilization of Panamanian biodiversity through R & D and Biotrade. This workshop is aimed at Latin American scientists interested in drug discovery from natural sources. This is the first time such a workshop on this topic in Latin America is being offered. While technologies associated with various aspects of drug discovery, and HTS in particular, are quite familiar to the scientists in pharmaceutical industry in North America and Europe, such is not the case with regards to those in central and South America. Therefore, there is an expressed need in Latin America to familiarize our scientists in this methodology. This workshop provides a unique opportunity to the Latin American Scientists to learn first hand from experts in the field. The speakers include directors of academic screening facilities, practitioners of HTS technologies and representatives from Pharma, Biotech, vendors and academia.

“There will be ample opportunity for the participants to network and explore partnering opportunities in the high throughput screening arena as well as drug discovery activities in general”
